Our university typeface, Freight, features Sans, Text and Micro fonts. The Freight family was selected because it is warm, open and legible at all sizes. Flexibility comes from using one type family that contains all necessary styles.
Freight is an Open Type font family made up of three styles, each with six weights and an extensive character set. Each style includes small capitals, fractions, standard ligature, lining and oldstyle figures, and more. The Freight family supports over 90 languages.
Designed specifically for a wide range of uses, the Freight family performs well online. Freight is free for use on websites created using Open Berkeley or our new brand web templates. The University has an institutional font license covering these sites.
If you are building a website using some other platform, you will need to enter into licensing agreement with Typekit in order to use Freight fonts. The basic cost runs $8 per month (1M page views per month). If your department needs more page views, Typekit has business plans to fit your needs
Alternative Web Font
Open Sans is recommended as the free web font alternative to Freight Sans. Commissioned by Google and optimized for web and mobile interfaces, Open Sans has excellent legibility characteristics in its letterforms. Like Freight Sans, it is a humanist sans serif typeface with a friendly appearance. Open Sans is downloadable free of charge at Font Squirrel.
Think about the intended usage and audience of your communication to help determine which fonts work best.
Fonts for use in print
Request access to the Freight font family. Once granted, you will receive a follow-up email with download instructions, in which you will be asked to register online using your CalNet ID.
This access entitles you to one seat license only. If others in your organization need the fonts, they must request access separately to this limited copyrighted resource. Do not share the font files.
Fonts for shared Microsoft Word and Powerpoint Documents
If you plan to share Microsoft Office documents with coworkers who don’t have the Freight font family loaded on their hard drives, the recommended substitute fonts are Georgia and Lucida Sans (PC) or Lucida Grande (Mac). These fonts are installed in our brand templates.
