We offer work-study positions for skilled Berkeley student photographers with an interest in journalism and teamwork.

We’re the staff at UC Berkeley’s Office of Communications & Public Affairs; content creators for berkeley.edu and news.berkeley.edu, the primary outward-facing websites of the university. We’re storytellers in an increasingly visual world, and we’re committed to running your best images, always with full credit.

Our award-winning writers and editors work in a quick turnaround, newsroom-style environment. Berkeley News stories run on our sites and our social channels, and are frequently picked up by major external news media. Promptness, responsibility and initiative are key qualities we seek in a candidate—along with talent. Check out our sites, and apply to join us in helping to craft great Berkeley stories with a lively, professional news team.

What we’re looking for:

  • Great images, shot either on location or in the studio. Assignments run the gamut from documentary photojournalism at live events to environmental portraits, conceptual studio shots or photo-driven news stories, slide shows, social media, and stills for videos we produce in-house.
  • A fresh approach to photography. Bring your own visual storytelling talent to our mix. Become familiar with our signature photo style, and the Berkeley brand.
  • Advanced skills at using digital cameras with a variety of equipment such as tripods, filters and flash attachments. Ability to deal with lighting challenges on the fly, on location. Adobe Photoshop expertise.
  • Caption information. We need notes on names, setting, etc., sent promptly to writers who write captions.
  • The ability to edit quickly, add metadata and send photos promptly to our editors using Google Drive. Model releases need to be signed and added along with photo files. You’ll also learn how to upload images to our online photo gallery.

You’re free to use your own camera. If you need additional equipment, we have Nikon cameras, lighting equipment and a studio space available for special projects.

If you qualify for work-study, email a link to your portfolio and your CV with the subject line “Photo Intern” to huldanelson@berkeley.edu.
